Where It Happens

The Beacon Atelier

“Part laboratory, part traditional Swedish bakery, part retail vault. Every bonbon, pastry, and brew is formulated on-site at 462 Main Street.”

Above the leather sofa, in red neon: Klappa takten alla bagarbarn — clap to the beat, all you baker’s children. Venture further in and you’ll find the line that finishes it: Bullfest, bullfest hela dan!, bun feast all day long. They are from a Swedish baker’s rhyme, and they set the mood for the room.

This is a working chocolate atelier and bakery that happens to have chairs in it. The cardamom buns come out of the oven a few feet from where you are sitting; the bonbons are painted by hand here, not shipped in.

Beacon suits it. An hour and a half on the train from Grand Central, with a mountain at one end of town and a world-class museum at the other — sophistication without the pretension, which is a very Swedish arrangement.

What is on the counter changes with the season and the morning’s baking. Take a table and stay a while, or take a box home to share.
